Great story published over the weekend on Yellow Springs Farm in the Montgomery County-based Times Herald. The author caught up with the Renzi’s at the Collegeville Farmer’s Market, where they set up shop every Saturday between 9:00am-1:00pm. They offer over 25 fresh and aged cheese varieties, as well as goat-milk caramel and native plants.

Doe Run Dairy’s seasonal robiola “Hummingbird” was named the Cheese of the Month for May in Grid Magazine.

From the article:
“When Kristian Holbrook named his mixed-milk robiola “Hummingbird,” he couldn’t have chosen a more perfect image. Like its namesake bird, this soft cheese is bright and delicate, with a nectar-like flavor profile that calls to mind vanilla and citrus. At one week, Hummingbird has the consistency of airy cheesecake; at three, the center liquefies and gains pungency.

“It’s got personality, but it’s not overbearing,” says Holbrook, who heads up the cheesemaking facility at Doe Run Farm.”

Congratulations Kristian and Doe Run Dairy!

Birchrun Hills Farm was featured in WHYY’s segment Friday Arts in March 2011.

From the website:

“A round of dairy farmer Sue Miller’s Birchrun cheese is more than a tasty snack. It is a living thing, which she cultures to a savory ripeness before it is ready for slicing and sharing at the dinner table. Cheese is a recent addition to the Millers’ family run farm, Birchrun Hills, in Chester County. Sue turned to cheese making out of necessity, responding to the strain of rising costs in the fluctuating economic climate. According to Sue, artisanal cheeses were a way of honoring the cows, which are the “backbone of the business,” while also supporting the financial health of the farm. This month, Friday Arts is invited inside the farm to watch the development of Birchrun cheese, from its milky beginnings to its maturity as a unique local delicacy.”

The Amazing Acres Goat Dairy, based in Elverson, PA is up for sale by owners Debbie Mikulak and Fred Bloom. Ideally, the five-acre farm, goat herd, cheese making operation, farmhouse and outbuildings, as well as the Amazing Acres name will all be sold together, but the business could be sold individually.

According to Debbie, the financial outlook for Amazing Acres is bright; from the Tri-County Record:

““We just had a meeting at the end of January of cheesemongers and cheese buyers in the area – and the (consensus is that) the local cheese market has not been touched yet. There’s just so much more capacity for more and more local cheeses. They just cannot get all that they need – if (we had been) producing more cheese we could sell a lot more, but we made a decision to only produce so much so that we could keep up with other things.”

Production of Amazing Acres‘ cheese will officially cease on March 19th, so stock up now!

Local writer Tenaya Darlington of the “Madame Fromage” blog visited Yellow Springs Farm recently while touring the Chester County Cheese Trail.

From her article: “What a pretty place Chester County is, full of tree canopy and fieldstone walls. Wind around enough curves, and you’ll come to Yellow Springs, where 50 Nubians graze next to a spring-fed pond.”
